When we started the home/school in Bhola, we knew we had a difficult road ahead of us and many projects to accomplish. The first obstacle was to win the trust of the local people and authority, to allow us to establish such a unique school, where boys and girls with different disabilities could live, study, work together.

At the beginning Ali went around the rural villages to find the disabled children that were hidden or abandoned to themselves; he kept also contacts with the local university where he gave many lectures introducing the ‘Bholas Children’s Way’ to take care of disabled children and orphans. Every month Ali invited the local government people, parents and students to ‘awareness day’ to see and live personally, to understand and appreciate the positive, human and successful way of looking after and teaching disabled children.

We have classes of sign languages where all the children can learn to communicate, even the blind! Some of the children had to learn how to eat, to walk, to interrelate with others. They all follow a basic curriculum of Bangla language and mathematics, but soon we would like to introduce more specific training courses according to the disabilities.

Most of the children learn to grow vegetables and rear animals, to enable them to sustain themselves in the future. Some learn to work in the wood workshop and in the tailoring and arts and crafts department.

The main aim is to allow to integrate the capable children into the local school and to prepare all of them to have a role in Bhola society even if for some with our constant help and monitoring. In this way we can help many more children hoping to help them to become independent adults.
